12/06/09 Blog

This is the last blog for the course. My first college semester was really fast and I felt like I didn't even pay to much attention to it. If i can do my first semester in college all over again, I would really focus more in school, turn in all my assignments on time, not want to hurry out of school as my last class ends, attend more events, and talk to counsolers and be more prepared. For the future, I am transferring to Evergreen Valley Community College to finish my GEs because it is much cheaper and right now SJSU is going trough some budget cuts and I wasn't able to receive the classes I needed.

12/02/09 Blog

It's the last 3 blogs so Dan wants us to write about our first semester in college. Regarding the school work I think I really lagged it and messed up on. I should have been more into my classes and my assignments instead of wanting to get out of school as soon as possible to hang out with my friends. That costed me alot beacuse I didnt do alot of assignments and so far has cause me to fail one class.

11/30/09 Blog

Well it's almost the end of the semester and for the last 3 blogs Dan wants us to write about our first semester in college. University was a little different than I expected but in a way the same. It was like going to a regular high school, but a high school where you know almost no one, the classes are bigger and are really fast paced, and the content of the courses make you analyze things more than in high school. Overall college is a good expirerience and for my first semester I fell like I missed out on alot beacuse I really didn't take advantage of what was given to us at school and was more worried of leaving school right after my last class.

Workshop- Choosing Your Major

One Muse workshop I attended was the Choosing Your Major workshop. This workshop took place at the career center. The workshop basically helped us figure out what major was best for us. The speaker told us that everything in your life such as childhood activities, hobbies, and things you like to do and don't lie to do play a big factor in what major you are heading towards. He also said that a person's personality can play a role in which career to pursue. He gave us many pointers and tips on how to find out which major is best for you and what kind of jobs you can do with each major after your graduate.

University Leadership Conference

Today I came with the MUSE class to the Leadership Conference Meeting at the MLK library. The president, John W. and the provost are both going to answer questions asked by the audience that attended the meeting. The questionnaire starts as almost every question is about the budget cuts. Both the president and the provost answer the questions with a response that makes it seem as the university is doing ok and we will overcome the harsh situation we are in. The keep reminding us to stay strong and to keep fighting when in reality they know the university is going down the drain. Another topic that was talked about a lot was the remedial students. The president explained that if a remedial student fails this semester, they will not be kicked out like it was said before, but now will have to complete that course in a community college within a year. While the student is taking the course at another college, they are welcome to still take other courses at SJSU. After that the meeting ended and everyone ran to the lemonade and cookies.

Your Journal- Ch 12

In all my work experience, I have had only two jobs. My favorite job so far is in the Merchandise department at Great America. I started in 2008 as an associate then worked my way up to a Lead, and next season I start as a supervisor. The other job that I started a week ago is at Ross. It is only a seasonal job until I start at Great America again in Febuary. The skills I learned from both my jobs that can be useful towards my future career would be managment skills, talking to people, and just business skills.

My ideal occupation would be to be a high school teacher. I think I would want to be a Spanish teacher and also be involved and take charge and be the Leadership teacher. I really don't know what is needed to be a teacher but I'm pretty sure a good college education. The chances of me actually persuing my ideal career is about a 3. Eventough I would like to teach for the rest of my life, it just doesn't pay off and especially now with all the budget cuts.

Know yourself- Ch 12

A person's values are an important factor in their future career. Values that are important to you such as your happiness, the amount of money you earn, or the extra time you have to spend with your family should be something that you base your decision of the future career you are pursuing because if you get a career where these values are not met, you might not enjoy it or perform to your best ability.

Senior/Peer Mentor Interview

On Monday November 16, the class interviewed both a Senior and a Peer Mentor on their college experience and a few things about San Jose State University. All the questions used in the interview were questions that the students of our class put together. The interviews were being recorded by Prof. Dan as a radio show using the program Audacity. The first interview was conducted by Patrick H. interviewing senior Matt. Matt is majoring in english and wants to be a high school english teacher. He also loves writting and hopes to write some good pieces in the near future. He told us that it is very inportant to get involved in clubs and organizations and that if he could go back and do his whole college experience again, he would only change that and get more involved. The second interview was conducted by Jose interviewing Peer Mentor Natalie. Natalie is majoring in dance. She talked about her dancing, and about being a peer mentor. She added that by being a peer mentor she got many helpful benefits such as being able to register for classes earlier and meeting many people around the campus. After each individual interview they joined together and talked about the economic crisis at San Jose Sate University. They both said that it's bad but we just got to hope for the best and keep fighting for our future.

Know Yourself: CH 11

Knowing how to prioritize your money is a very important skill, especially when attending college and having a lot of expenses. One way I prioritize by figuring out what are my needs and my wants. If I need something I will most likely lean my money towards buying that than rather buying something I want but don't really need. Finding the difference between needs and wants will really help you spend money correctly and prioritize what needs to be bought.

When it came to earning money, it was something that was easy for me. My mom usually gave me money and paid for everything I needed. When I turned 16, I decided to look for a job and got hired at Great America. When I started working that was my main source of earnings and till this day it still is. As I started earning more money I started spending it non stop. I spent it on clothes, shoes, trips, and gifts. I use to spend it carelessly, but now I manage my money wisely and save when possible.

Money managment is something that is very important while in college. In my situation, I know how to manage my money wisely. I always know how much money I will have for the week or month after paying off my priorities, such as school supplies, food, gas, and clothes. I also know how to manage money when it comes to planning my monthly vacations. I see how much money I have and it determines how big and far my trip/vacation is.

Getting a good night sleep and plenty of rest is very important to a person, especially when in college. In my case, I believe that I have very bad sleeping habits. I usually stay up late night, and have to wake up early in the morning. I sometimes take day naps, but I don't think I receive enough sleep or enough rest. I need to try to fix my sleeping habits because it will help me with my health and with keeping myself energized at school.

Stress plays a big factor on someone's emotions. When I'm very stressed I tend to have alot of emotions. Sometimes I'm happy and feel determine to overcome and finish whatever has me stressed. Other times stress really makes me angry and sometimes sad. I feel like giving up on my tasks because I have so many things piled up. And then after my anger I become sad when I think about the consequences that are going to happen if I continue to give up and not complete my tasks.

Cheating is something many people are tempted to do everyday in many aspects of life. One situation I could have cheated in high school was in tests. Cheating makes it easy for someone to obtain correct answers from someone with out studying. I could have easily cheated and copied someone on a test one time when I didn't study and would have received a good grade. I decided not to cheat because it was not fair for that person to study all the time and get a good grade versus me not studying, cheating, and receiving the same grade as he did. I felt that I had to own up to my actions and take the test fair and if I got a bad grade then it would be my fault for not preparing correctly.

If I try to sleep early all I end up doing is rolling around in my bed for hours and get fustrated and hop on the computer. I usually get only 4 hours of sleep every night and I'm not tired during the day and again the next day same routine, can't sleep at night. I need more sleep!!!!

I sometimes eat Costco salads, but I don't think it's healthy when I pour it in ranch. I know i should eat healthier, but it is a hard thing to do when I don't have time to eat at home.

10/07/09 Blog About Video Project

Today in class we learned alot about recording, editing, and uploading videos. The first part is recording the video. Recording is the easiest part, you grab a video camera or any other recording device and record yourself or others in any activity you would like. Then you upload the video into your computer. Once you have completed that, then comes editing. Editing is where one can get creative. You can add music, special effects, titles, endings, remove footoge, and add extra footage. Once you have edited your video, then comes uploading it into the web. The best place to upload your video is Youtube. Once you have your video uploaded on youtube, you share it with millions of viewers and receive many hits and maybe get famous on teh internet.

Forming study groups is very important in college. The class I think I would befenefit from forming study groups in is my MAS10 A course. The course requires a lot of thinking and analyzing the formation of our Mexican-American culture. By forming study groups, we can hear different points of views and can help us in writting our essays.

Movie Project Ideas

My group and I are creating a movie project for our MUSE class. We are thinking that our movie is going to be about an old man who asks a young, strong guy to help him defeat his great enemy in a battle. As the man explains the battle, he makes it seem as it's going to be a boxing match so the young guy gets all pumped up and wants to battle. The old man trains the young guy day and night, with strong battle like trainings for the big event. On the big day of the battle, the young guy prapares and is ready for the fight. When they both arrive at the battle scene, the young guy quickly realizes that it's not a boxing match he is going to battle in, but just a simple chess match. The young guy flips out in rage and looses the battle.

I love Halloween and costume parties because you can dress up as anything and play a different role other than yourself for a day. If I was to go to a costume party I would dress up as Hercules or Prince Charming, especially this year because my friends' halloween costume theme this year is Disney. I think I would be a great Prince Charming because of my good looks and charm or a strong Hercules because he is my favorite Disney heroe.

Reviewing your syllabus when starting a course is very important. Reviewing the syllabus will help you check how much work the class will require, how to pace your readings, and all the ways to be able to reach out and talk to your proffesor when you need help. This will be useful in making sure the class is for you and that you can be able to manage to pass the class.

09/23/09 SJSU Event- "Mexicans in San Jose" authors book explanation and book signing.

One of the SJSU campus events I attended was authors Nannette Regua and Arturo Villareal talk about their book "Mexicans in San Jose". It was very interesting hearing about the motivation they had to write the book. They wanted to write the book because it's one of the only book written about Mexicans in San Jose. The book explains Mexican's first way of living in San Jose, the environment they lived in, and everything regarding the Chicano movement in San Jose.

When writing a paper it is always better to finish it early so you can have time to edit and revise it. There are many different revision strategies. One revision strategy that works the best with me is using computer functions to check my spelling and grammar. Another great strategy is having a professor or teacher read it over allowing them to make comments and helping me making sure my paper is well written and ready to be turned in.

Your Journal- One time I have observed someone giving a bad speech was during high school graduation. As the ASB President began her speech everyone realized it was going to be delivered badly. She began to stutter and wasn't loud enough for people to hear. Many people did not understand the whole speech. She should have been more prepared and confident, and her speech would have been great.

Chapter 2 and 3

One bad habit that is hurting the way I manage time is my friends. I still have the mentality of going out with my friends and having fun is more important than school. I sometimes put all my homework and school work as my last priority because i can't stand not going out and having fun. I should really change this bad habit because it can really hurt me later on as school work gets harder and when I have to focus and study for exams and midterms.

MLK Library Tour

On September 9 our muse class took a trip to the MLK Library. At the MLK library we learned a lot of useful material that could help us out with many papers we may later have to write. One thing we learned was how to look for and use data basses and scholarly papers. Another thing we learned was that there is a different option to view books, which is viewing them online. We also learned how to look for books in the library. One important thing we learned which can be very helpful is Ref Works. Ref Works is a website that helps you write your bibliography for you as you do your research. I am glad we had the tour because I learned many things that will help make things easier.

Chapter 1 Review

Choosing a major is a really easy but complicated process. Before choosing you must really look into what interests you. You may also want to look at skills that you are good at. Seek out students who are studying in particular fields and ask them about the career and what it takes to reach it. No matter what, do not choose a career because your parents chose it for you or because all your friends chose that certain career. You choose what you want to be in life and always keep in mind that the career you choose is going to be the career for the rest of your life.

09/09/09 Session

Today's session wasn't like very other session. Today we took a trip to the Martin Luther King Library located here on our very own SJSU campus. At the library we learned many things that can help us with our schoolwork. Some of those things are RefWorks and looking up for books from the SJLibrary catalogue.

09/02/09 Session

Todays class session was fun. We talked about our trip to the library and we learned how to use Blackboard to turn in all our assignments.

Know Yourself- Activities are very important. The activities I enjoy the most is hanging out with my friends and family. When I'm with them we do activities such as bike riding, horse riding, hiking, and partying. All these activities are very fun and help you explore new things and feelings. None of these activities really relate to my career goal but they are very fun activities that everybody should try every once in a while.

The Adventure Called College

Finally, August 24th came around and it was time to start school once again. I was really excited and got to school with my friend Soraida. I began walking down the school and discovered that many people I know go to SJSU. I began my first class Mexican American Studies and I was very excited f0r the course. My second class was the Get Internet Famous. It was interesting and it seems like I can learn from it. The next day I had my remedial English. I am very worried about this class because if i dont pass the course I will be withdrawn from SJSU. My last class was Math 70. For the first day it was pretty easy because it was material I had already covered in high school. Over all, the week was easy and I am looking foward to the rest of the semester.
